Head of People & Culture

Our diverse and talented team all have one thing in common – passion. Passion for the work we do, and the people we do it with. We’ve taken this opportunity to have a chat with our Head of Strategy to find out why he loves working at 4mation Technologies.

Name: Edward Wong
Role: Head of Strategy

Where are you from?
Originally from Hong Kong, but that was a loooooooooong time ago.

What are you most passionate about in your role?
Making things (our people, culture, work & clients) better.

What has been your greatest achievement?
In a professional sense, it’s been making the shift from technician to manager and finally to leader, and overcoming my own personal demons to be good and effective at each role.

What is your favourite thing about working at 4mation?
I love working with the people at 4mation and I love the culture. One of our most visible values is passion – We do things well or not at all. I can see it every day in the interactions amongst the teams. Yes, there can at times be heated debate, but having people who are passionate enough to have those discussions is a good and healthy thing for any company.

Why did you choose to work in this field?
I grew up in the age before the internet was more than a pure research tool, when personal computers were beige boxes with green monochrome crt’s on top.

As a kid, I watched Dr. Who, Battlestar Galactica, and cartoons like Star Blazers and Robotech. I read Arthur C Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Roger Zelazny, Jack Vance. Reading fantasy & sci-fi makes you realise that what you can do – what’s possible – is only limited by your imagination.

In 1984, my father brought home an Apple IIe. This opened my eyes to the wonderful world of computers. I soon discovered that I could use my imagination to make things happen via Apple’s BASIC language. So began my journey into software development.

How have you surprised yourself lately?
I started running again (the Wednesday ABC Run) after almost a year of no real exercise, and:

  1. I didn’t have a heart attack
  2. My time wasn’t terribly bad

Who is your greatest inspiration?
My son, Alexander.

If your life was made into a movie, which actor would play you?
Donnie Yen, ’cause I studied Wing Chun Kung Fu for a couple of years. He’s also taller than me and looks bad-ass, but intelligent at the same time.

What was the last book you read?
The last book was “Scaling Up” by Verne Harnish. I’m currently reading “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. That will be followed by “Great by Choice” (also by Jim Collins).

What do you do in your spare time?
I spend time with my family.

Personal motto: There’s always something interesting lurking beyond the boundaries of what you think you know. Reach out and find it.
